A Winnipeg police officer is facing a charge of assault after allegedly using excessive force to arrest a 12-year-old boy in August.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which is tasked with investigating serious incidents involving police officers in the province, announced Wednesday that its investigation of the arrest “determined there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.”
The 16-year veteran Winnipeg police constable, who has not been named, has been issued an appearance notice and will appear in court Jan. 17.

The IIU announced Sept. 29 that it was investigating the Aug. 7 matter even though the boy wasn’t injured during the arrest.
IIU civilian director Zane Tessler said at the time that while the incident occurred during August, police service officials didn’t know about it until Sept. 27.
Tessler said Wednesday that he can’t comment further about the matter now that it’s before the courts.
