PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Jennifer Jones/Mark Nichols and Kaitlyn Lawes/John Morris were both winners Friday afternoon as the playoffs got underway at the 2018 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials.
Jones/Nichols defeated Jill Officer/Reid Carruthers 8-6, while Lawes/Morris defeated Dana Ferguson/Brendan Bottcher 8-6.
In other games on the opening draw of the playoffs, Brad Gushue/Val Sweeting defeated Laura Crocker/Geoff Walker 7-4, while Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant defeated Chelsea Carey/Colin Hodgson 6-4.
Jones/Nichols will now face Gushue/Sweeting Friday night, while Lawes/Morris will face Peterman/Gallant.
The winners of those two games will advance to Saturday afternoon’s 1 vs 1 game, where the winner goes straight to Sunday afternoon’s final, while the loser gets a second chance in Saturday night’s semifinal.
In other games Friday night, Officer/Carruthers takes on Crocker/Walker, while Carey/Hodgson plays Ferguson/Bottcher.
Those are must win-games — the losers will be eliminated.
The winner on Sunday will represent Canada in mixed doubles curling next month at the Winter Olympics.
