Fort Rouge to host 2019 Canadian mixed curling championship

The Canadian mixed championship is returning to the curling hotbed of Manitoba.

Winnipeg’s Fort Rouge Curling Club will host the 2019 national mixed championship, set for Nov. 5-10 of this year, Curling Canada announced today.

The 2018 four-player mixed event was just staged in Swan River in mid-November, and Ontario’s Mike Anderson won the title.

In less than 10 months, it’s the venerable Daly Street South club’s turn to open its doors to the best mixed foursomes in Canada.

“We were thrilled to have our bid accepted… I know everyone at the Fort Rouge will be working extremely hard over the next 10 months to make sure we’re ready to put on a wonderful show for the curlers and fans alike,” said Brad McLean, who is partnering with Deb McCreanor as host committee co-chairs.

“We love our curling at the Fort Rouge, but we also love making sure people have a good time, and I know the 2019 Canadian Mixed will have plenty of opportunities for visitors to do exactly that.”

The winning team will represent Canada at the ’19 world mixed championship (dates and location to be determined).

Winnipeg has hosted a pair of national mixed events, each won by curling legends. In 1974, Saskatchewan’s Rick Folk prevailed, while Northern Ontario’s Rick Lang took the crown in 1981.

Manitoba teams have won eight national mixed titles, most recently by Winnipeg’s Sean Grassie in 2009 at Iqaluit, Nunavut.
