A man carrying a sawed-off rifle and ammunition has been arrested after police responded to what they thought was a break and enter in the West End.
Officers rushed to an apartment building on the 600 block of Ellice Avenue on Tuesday about 4:45 a.m., after a resident said someone was trying to break in, Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jay Murray said Wednesday.
When police arrived and were heading to the suite they discovered a suspect hiding behind a doorway wearing a balaclava and a mask.
After detaining the suspect they first found a large hunting knife and a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle, Murray said.
“It’s just the metal innards of the firearm,” Murray said while holding the firearm inside a police evidence baggie. The firearm was just a bit longer than a standard pen.
“This is just another example of the non-traditional firearms officers find on the street.”
Two pouches containing two different calibres of ammunition were also found during the search of the suspect.
Police determined there was no break and enter, Murray said.
Jesse James Daher, 25, of Winnipeg, has been charged with several offences including two counts of possession of a weapon and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.
Daher has been detained in custody.
