Steven Fletcher wants his old job back.

The Assiniboia MLA announced his intention to seek the nomination for the Conservative party in the federal riding of Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley on social media Monday afternoon.

That’s the same riding he represented in the House of Commons between 2004 and 2015.

“After several years as President of the Electoral District Association, I will be taking a leave of absence until the nomination process is complete,” Fletcher wrote.

“I look forward to continuing my role as MLA for Assiniboia in the upcoming legislative session…I appreciate everyone’s support, I really do.”

After being defeated in the 2015 federal election, Fletcher transitioned to provincial politics, being elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly roughly six months later in 2016.

A long-serving member in former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet, Fletcher has the distinction of being the first quadriplegic to serve in parliament.

In June 2017, the outspoken politician was expelled from the Manitoba Progressive-Conservative caucus. That move came after he expressed frequent public criticism of his own provincial government.

Since his expulsion Fletcher has served as an independent MLA.
