A convenience store customer who tried to stop an alleged thief was in hospital Wednesday, recovering from a stab wound, Winnipeg police say.

According to police, the customer was in a business on the 100 block of Isabel Street on Tuesday night, when an employee spotted a male suspect — recognizing him from a previous theft incident in February, police said — and told him to leave.

The suspect reportedly grabbed two drinks and attempted to flee when the customer intervened.

After grabbing the suspect and attempting to hold on to him, the customer — a 38-year-old man — was stabbed once in the upper body by an unknown person, police said. Both suspects fled the scene on foot, and police were called at about 8:40 p.m.

A canine unit tracked and located one of the suspects, who was in custody Wednesday, police said.

Ermiyas Isaac Dangerfield, 20, of Winnipeg, was arrested and charged with robbery and aggravated assault.
