The University of the North officially opened a $2 million expansion of science labs on its campus in The Pas Friday.
The expansion will allow up to 240 students studying to be scientists, teachers and nurses to access lab space for their research, and it includes a designated space for a lab assistant to conduct ongoing research.
Renovations also include upgrades to chemical storage and lab equipment such as fume hoods and safety devices.
The university invested $1.1 million, the federal government $550,000 and the province $450,000.
The new labs let the university espond to northern and Indigenous research and educational priorities, and also bring the lab up to industry standards.
“The renovation of the science lab at UCN’s campus in The Pas helps to ensure that science students, teacher education students taking science . . . and nursing students have access to state-of-the-art facilities that will prepare them for the challenges they will face in their working lives,” said university president and vice chancellor Doug Lauvstad in an announcement about the official opening.
Federal Innovation, Sciences and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains called the retrofit and expansion a “once-in-a-generation” investment that fits with federal strategies to position Canada as a global leader in science and research.
“Not only is the investment at the University College of the North improving both the safety and functionality of the science labs, it will also make students innovation-ready to come up with bright ideas or land a new job,” the federal minister said in the statement.
Manitoba Education Minister Ian Wishart also praised the expansion for the prospects it holds. “We recognize that modern science and technology infrastructure is essential for Manitobans to be able to collaborate on and contribute to cutting-edge research,” the provincial minister said in the statement.
