LAS VEGAS — The prime architect of the Winnipeg Jets is a finalist for the NHL’s general manager of the year award.

Kevin Cheveldayoff joins Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee and Tampa Bay Lightning counterpart Steve Yzerman in the category. The winner will be announced at the NHL awards June 20 in Vegas.

McPhee is the runaway favourite, considering he built his Western Conference finalist team from scratch through the expansion draft and trade market in short order.

Yzerman has made his Lightning squad a perennial contender. They currently trail the Washington Capitals 2-1 in the Eastern Conference final.

Cheveldayoff has preached “draft and development” for years and it finally paid off this season as the Jets set franchise marks for wins and points, then won the first two playoff rounds in team history.

He also pulled off what might have been the best deadline-day deal in obtaining Paul Stastny from the St. Louis Blues. His off-season signings including Dmitry Kulikov, Steve Mason and Matt Hendricks.

Two other Jets are up for year-end awards. Connor Hellebuyck is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as best goaltender, while Blake Wheeler is nominated for the Mark Messier leadership award.
