Police investigate Charleswood deaths

The police homicide unit is investigating after two bodies were found in a Charleswood home on the long weekend.

The house at 625 Buckingham Rd. was sealed off Tuesday morning as forensic investigators worked at the scene.

Police were called to the home at about 9 p.m. Monday after the bodies of two adults were found, the Winnipeg Police Service said.

A handful of neighbours gathered to watch the police activity Tuesday morning.

The longtime neighbours, who did not want to be named, said they noticed one of the couple’s sons outside the home, very distraught, Monday night.

“It seemed weird,” one said.

Police arrived at the home within minutes, the neighbours said.

It’s not clear who the two dead people found inside are. The neighbours said a couple who appear to be in their early 50s live there and keep to themselves.

“Very quiet,” one neighbour said, adding the woman is “a phantom” who’s rarely seen.

The couple has lived in the quiet Charleswood suburb for more than a dozen years. They have long been a curiosity among nearby residents after separate incidents in the summer of 2009, when the WPS tactical support team twice raided the home, just days apart.

One neighbour recounted an incident shortly before the raids where a stranger knocked on his door one evening asking to buy drugs. He directed her across the street. The next morning, the neighbour “banged angrily” on the couple’s door. The man answered. “Don’t have your people coming knocking on my door,” the neighbour said. “Don’t let your world interfere with my world.”

After that confrontation, the neighbours didn’t speak for years.

Over the course of the morning, more than a dozen pet carriers were taken into the home from two Winnipeg Humane Society emergency services vans. A few of the containers, carrying cats, were later removed by WHS staff.

No one at the scene Tuesday knew the first or last names of the couple. None of them heard any gunshots Monday, noting the man who lives in the home was doing yardwork that afternoon.

The incident was unsettling, the neighbours said.

“The whole thing is sad,” one said.

A source at city hall said records show the registered owners are Lorne and Angela Turner.
