Summer 2018 is creeping to an end, but you’ve still got the Labour Day long weekend to create a few more memories, sleep in or be out and about.
Labour Day is a federal statutory holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September. It officially became a national holiday in Canada in 1894, and is meant to honour labourers and workers.
The Free Press does not publish on Labour Day, but be sure to check out winnipegfreepress.com throughout the weekend and on Labour Day Monday for news and information.
With many businesses changing their hours of operation, here’s an idea of what to expect this 2018 Labour Day weekend, and on Monday.
Shopping
Shopping malls across the city are closed Monday.
The Forks Market building is open Monday for regular hours from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Retail stores will also be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., approximately. However, tenants may open earlier or close later at their discretion. Please contact individual merchants for their hours of operation. The Common is open Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are closed Monday.
Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg are closed Monday. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, go to liquormarts.ca/hours.
Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests calling the store you want to find out if it is open.
Entertainment
The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Gates close at 4:30 p.m.)
The Manitoba Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special exhibitions include Hockey: the Stories Behind Our Passion and Manitoba Heart of Hockey.
The Children’s Museum is open Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Children’s Museum will be closed Sept. 4-7 for cleaning and annual facility maintenance. The Children’s Museum will reopen Sept. 8, with fall hours in effect of Sunday to Thursday at 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open Monday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is open Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All Landmark Cinema and Cineplex Odeon movie theatres are running regular show times. Check their websites for movies and hours.
Winnipeg casinos are open Monday. When a statutory holiday falls on a Monday, the casinos are open from 10 a.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Recycling and trash
Recycling, garbage and yard waste will be collected Monday, as normally scheduled for those with Monday as their collection day.
The Brady Road landfill is open Monday (commercial customers only), 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Brady 4R Winnipeg depot is open Monday (residential customers only), 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Pacific 4R and Panet 4R Winnipeg depots are closed Monday.
Leisure activities
All leisure centres are closed Monday.
All municipal golf courses are open every day during the long weekend from dawn until dusk, approximately 6 a.m. to sundown.
All City of Winnipeg indoor swimming pools are closed Monday.
Weather permitting, City of Winnipeg outdoor pools are open Monday, with operating hours varying by pool, at Fort Garry Lions, Freighthouse, Kildonan Park, St. Vital, Transcona Aquatic Park and Westdale.
Weather permitting, City of Winnipeg wading pools are open Monday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Central Park, Dakota Park, Machray Park, Shaughnessy Park, Sturgeon Heights CC, Vimy Ridge Memorial Park, Westdale and West Kildonan Memorial CC.
Weather permitting, all City of Winnipeg spray pads will be open Monday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Winnipeg Transit
Buses will operate Monday on a Sunday schedule.

Libraries
All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed Sunday and Monday.

Cemeteries
Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open Monday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cemetery offices will be closed Monday.

Government services
Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Monday.
The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed Monday.
The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed Monday.
There is no mail delivery on Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
