The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have named veteran centre Matthias Goossen as this year’s recipient of the Ed Kotowich Good Guy Award. This honour acknowledges a player who has excellent football ability, displays locker-room leadership and exhibits outstanding effort in the community.

Meanwhile, Winnipeg running back Andrew Harris has been shortlisted for the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Trophy. The honour has been awarded every year since 2010 to a Canadian CFL player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada’s veterans: strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities. The award recognizes Gaudaur for embodying these attributes both as the league’s longest-standing commissioner and as a distinguished veteran of the Second World War.

Goossen, chosen second overall in the 2014 CFL draft, has not missed a game since making his first start on Aug. 7, 2014. It is Goossen’s second Ed Kotowich award win; he also received the honour in 2016.

During his career in Winnipeg, Goossen has been heavily invested in community work. He has served as an ambassador for the Break the Silence on Violence Against Women program since 2015, appeared in PSAs and visited schools to talk about the importance of the program. Goossen is also an ambassador for the Bombers Tackle Bullying program.

He has also served as a guest coach at several Blue Bombers Futures amateur football camps and volunteers with Athletes in Action.

Kotowich was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for seven seasons from 1955-61. He played in three Grey Cup games during that time (1958, 1959 and 1961) and earned individual recognition as a West Division all-star and was also awarded the Tommy Lumsden Award as the club’s Most Outstanding Canadian Player.

Harris is among nine nominees for the Gaudaur award, a list that also includes: Rolly Lumbala, B.C. Lions; Ryan King, Edmonton Eskimos; Junior Turner, Calgary Stampeders; Makana Henry, Saskatchewan Roughriders; Mike Daly, Hamilton Tiger-Cats; Declan Cross, Toronto Argonauts; Jean-Philippe Bolduc, Ottawa Redblacks; and Martin Bédard, Montreal Alouettes.

This year’s Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award recipient will be honoured during the CFL Awards on Nov. 22 during Grey Cup week in Edmonton.
