Suspect suffers gunshot wound during police shooting, pursuit

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is probing an officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg that left a 23-year-old suspect with a gunshot wound following a dramatic chase Wednesday night.

Winnipeg officers patrolling in the area of McLeod Avenue and Raleigh Street were flagged down by the victim of an assault at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Police began to pursue three suspects — believed to be armed with a weapon — who fled in a vehicle, but aborted the pursuit because the suspects were driving recklessly and at dangerous speeds.

Additional police vehicles flooded the area and located the suspects’ vehicle stopped at the intersection of Panet Road and Nairn Avenue, which resulted in officers setting up a containment block.

The suspects rammed their vehicle through the containment, leading officers to discharge their firearms.

It remains unclear how many officers fired or how many shots were fired.

A second pursuit led to the area of Marion Street and Archibald Street, where the suspects’ vehicle left the road and began traveling down the railway tracks.

Three suspects, two men and a woman, were taken into custody shortly after.

It was discovered during the arrest one of them, a 23-year-old man, was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital for treatment and has been released. He remains in custody.

During the arrest, a WPS street supervisor suffered minor injuries when he was struck by a moving train. He was treated at hospital and released.

The IIU has confirmed it is investigating.
