Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers admitted this morning he skated on a fractured leg in Game 6 of the team’s playoff series with the St. Louis Blues.

He sustained the injury blocking a shot from defenceman Colton Parayko in Game 5 in Winnipeg on Thursday.

“It did not feel great. We tried a lot of things to make it feel a little better. For me, it’s part of it. Everyone’s playing with injuries and I didn’t want to sit out, I wanted to play,” Ehlers told reporters, as the Jets met with the media for the final time.

“I wanted to help this team. I don’t know what could have happened if we won that game, but I wanted to play and they told me I could.”

Ehlers failed to register a point in the playoffs. His injury does not require off-season surgery, he said.

Winnipeg lost the best-of-seven, opening-round playoff series 4-2 to St. Louis. They were knocked out Saturday with a 3-2 loss in St. Louis.

Patrik Laine also said he suffered back problems for much of the season, and it flared up in the series with the Blues.

Meanwhile, Blake Wheeler said Jets have the right man guiding them behind the bench as Paul Maurice continues to have his respect and admiration.

“I’d go through a brick wall for that guy. I don’t want to play for anyone else,” said Wheeler, one of about a dozen players to take questions this morning at Bell MTS Place.
