Construction will begin in the fall of 2020 on a new bridge crossing the Red River Floodway on Highway 59 north of Winnipeg.

The current bridge, built in 1964, has reached the end of its service life, Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said Thursday at a news conference at the site.

The floodway span is heavily used, especially in summer, when Winnipeggers head out to Birds Hill Park and Grand Beach.

Schuler said he would not provide a cost estimate for the project in advance of the tendering process.

Preliminary design work is expected to be done in June, with a detailed plan completed later this summer. The new bridge is expected to be completed by the fall of 2023.

The existing bridge will remain open during construction.

“Construction will be staged to accommodate the operation of the Red River Floodway,” Schuler said.

He said no private property is expected to be acquired to complete the project.

A public information session on the project will be held May 22 at the East St. Paul Curling Club (260 Hoddinot Rd.).
