Police probe homicide on Taylor Avenue

Winnipeg police were on the scene Sunday of a slaying overnight on Taylor Avenue.

Police released few details about the circumstances of the homicide, other than saying they responded to a call about a disturbance in an apartment on the 1000 block of Taylor Avenue around 3:40 a.m..

Officers found an unresponsive man in one of the suites. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died.

The killing is the 14th homicide this year.

Const. Jay Murray said the investigation is still in its early stages.

“We knew this would generate a lot of attention and we wanted to provide some information. This is the 14^th homicide of this year,” Murray said.

The year is on track to exceed the rate of homicides Winnipeg normally experiences but police declined to call it a trend. 

“I don’t think there’s a way to accurately predict what we’re going to see,” Murray said.

Police would not say anything about the victim, whether they had a suspect or any details about the circumstances surrounding the death.

“One of the usual questions we get is what is the method of injuries, was it a stabbing, a beating. That’s not something we can release. We still have a number of witnesses to interview, ” Murray said. 

On one point, however, police were clear. There did not seem to be an elevated concern for public safety, not even for tenants in the apartment block where the homicide happened.

The homicide occurred in the Palm Garden Apartments, a three-storey block across from a Walmart store on a busy stretch of Taylor Avenue in the Grant Park area.

The block is also located behind the Grant Park mall.
