Winnipeg pizza chef wins global acclaim

When the World Pizza Championship names you the best pizza maker in Canada, that’s a big cheesy deal.

The newly minted pizza impresario is Thomas Schneider, who bakes his pies at a Linden Woods-area pizzeria called Timmy Tom’s. It’s part of the Trans Canada Brewing Company location at 1290 Kenaston Blvd.

The pizza organization crowned the Winnipeg chef with the title at its annual three-day competition last month in Parma, Italy. The annual competition is touted as the largest pizza show on earth with over 6,500 independent chains and franchise owners from all over the world.

Schneider had previously placed prominently in a competition held in Atlantic City, New Jersey last year and at another at the Las Vegas Pizza Expo this year, but this was his first big win. Schneider, who also owns Timmy Tom’s, won top Canadian in the Classica division at the competition.

“And there’s something else. I was asked to be on the world pizza championship team. That’s a great honour,” Schneider said.

The team acts as ambassadors for a U.S.-based, non-profit multinational group of pizza chefs that promotes the culinary art under the banner World Pizza Champions.

Schneider will next compete in the Canadian Pizza Summit in Toronto Oct. 21.

Timmy Tom’s isn’t the only pizza champ in town. Winnipeg is also home to five-time Canadian pizza baking champion Diane Cline, whose pizzeria Diana’s Cucina and Lounge is located on St. Anne’s Road.

Cline is also a member of the world pizza championship team and will be a judge at the Toronto pizza summit.
