The Winnipeg Railway Museum has reopened its doors to the public, after a temporary closure.
A statement released Monday by the museum said it had been ordered to close on short notice due to “code violations.”
Doug Bell, president of Midwestern Rail Association — which supplies volunteers that operate the Winnipeg Railway Museum — disputed earlier claims there were structural faults with the building, saying re-roofing was to blame.
“It’s not a structural problem. They’re going to re-roof the building, is what it is there,” he said Monday.
The museum said in its statement, had it been aware of any issues, “it would not have allowed the public to enter the museum and closed arbitrarily to address the situation.”
Some structural risks were discovered during an engineering analysis on the train shed that houses the museum, Marie-Anna Murat, senior director of corporate communications for Via Rail Canada previously told the Free Press.
“Since safety is our No. 1 priority, as we owned the building, we decided to close the museum to pursue different renovation options,” said Murat.
The museum, located at Union Station, has resumed normal hours of operation, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
