Two feared dead after train collides with truck

A “serious” collision with a Canadian Pacific freight train dragged a pickup truck onto a bridge Monday afternoon, crumpling the vehicle and prompting a response from multiple first responder units.

A northbound train struck a vehicle on Roblin Boulevard, between Alboro Street and Highway 334, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Headingley RCMP said in a news release.

The impact caused the truck to be pushed along the tracks onto a train bridge that spans the Assiniboine River. Emergency crews, including Winnipeg Fire Department and its water rescue unit, CP Police and EMS personnel, were called to the scene.

Eyewitnesses said it appeared two people died as a result of the collision, and the river was being searched for any other potential victims.

RCMP did not initially confirmed any number of people injured or dead.

In its news release, police said officers and emergency services personnel would be on scene for an “extended period of time.”

For its investigation and the work of first responders, RCMP had closed Roblin Boulevard, between Alboro Street and Highway 334, as well as Highway 334, between Keough Avenue and Roblin.
