When Danielle Tattrie stepped up to the microphone at Bell MTS Place to answer trivia questions during a break in the action during the Jets game Monday night, she wasn’t expecting a diamond ring to be part of the prize.

With boyfriend Justin Tetreault at her side and family members seated nearby, Tattrie, 29, was asked to asked to correctly identify a former National Hockey League player from each pair of photos flashing across the massive scoreboard screen during a TV timeout.

As the 30-second clock wound down with more than 15,000 fans watching, Tattrie failed to answer a single question correctly.

“I thought I was going to win $15 for the names that I got right. I got every one wrong,” she said. “I butchered it.”

The final photo, however, was of someone she knew very well; it was of Tetreault, kneeling in front of a Christmas tree in the Kenora couple’s apartment, with a ring box in his hand. The caption read: “Will you marry me?”

“I got that one right!” she said. “I was so excited, I was so shocked and surprised, but really happy.”

“She didn’t cry until later when we got back to the hotel,” Tetreault, 29, added.

“When I realized what I agreed to,” Tattrie joked.

The successful proposal was among the only highlights in an otherwise disappointing 6-2 loss to Montreal… for Jets fans, that is; an estimated 5,000 red-clad Canadiens fans enjoyed the evening.

“It wasn’t (the Jets’) best performance but that’s OK, we still had fun, obviously,” Tattrie said.

“We’re definitely going back,” Tetreault said.

The couple met while working in a gold mine in Red Lake, Ont. five years ago and have been dating since. They often drive into Winnipeg to take in Jets games and are both huge fans of the team, Tetreault said.

Two weeks ago, Tetreault, reached out to True North Sports and Entertainment to arrange the proposal.

“I knew she was the one for a while, and I knew she was the one that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with,” he said. “I really wanted to make it memorable for her.

“Hats off to the Winnipeg Jets because they really helped me out. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

True North vice-president of communications and content Rob Wozny said the organization gets numerous requests each season from romantics hoping to pop the question at home games.

“We select one or two based on timing of the year and how it can potentially work into an in-game promotion, much like last night’s proposal,” he said Tuesday. “Congratulations to Justin and Danielle, who got to share their big moment with 15,000 of their friends at Bell MTS Place.”
