The University of Manitoba’s faculty of engineering has a new name and benefactor, following a $20-million donation from the family behind Price Industries Ltd.
The Price Faculty of Engineering was officially announced Wednesday afternoon at the U of M’s Fort Garry campus to coincide with the multimillion-dollar donation by Gerry and Barb Price. The funds will support seven faculty member positions over 10 years.
Gerry Price is the chairman and chief executive officer for Winnipeg-based Price Industries. The company, which was founded in 1946, and maintains its head office at 638 Raleigh St. in the Munroe West neighbourhood, is a global entity specializing in the manufacture and development of air distribution systems.

Price Industries currently employs 3,500 people and has 19 sales offices and 13 manufacturing sites across the continent.
“The transformational gift announced today will position the Price Faculty of Engineering to offer outstanding engineering programs through the 2020s and beyond for the benefit of not just our students, but also, through our graduates and research, to the future well-being and prosperity of Manitoba and Canada,” faculty dean Jonathan Beddoes said in a written statement.
Both Gerry and Barb Price are graduates of the U of M and previously contributed $1.25 million to the institution’s $500-million fundraising campaign in 2016. The donation supported the development of the Price Engineering Innovation and Prototype Centre, which recently opened its doors to students, and provided bursaries to Indigenous students pursuing a bachelor of science degree in engineering at the Winnipeg university.
Late last year, the Price Family Foundation also donated $600,000 to the school to establish the Price graduate scholarships for women in engineering. The first 10 recipients received scholarships valued at $12,000 in November 2019.
