The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair has been cancelled for 2020, on what would have been the 50th anniversary of the “royal” designation of Brandon’s historic event.
The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba made the announcement this morning.
“It’s an extremely difficult decision,” said general manager Ron Kristjansson.
The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba hosts the annual event at the Keystone Centre.
The exhibition board made the difficult decision to cancel during an emergency meeting Thursday to discuss how to proceed with the COVID-19 pandemic, Kristjansson said.
“I think we’ve all been monitoring the releases, the recommendations from Manitoba Health,” he said, and with the need for ‘social distancing’ between people during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was just not feasible.
“We can’t function in that environment and do what our event needs to do.”
The six-day fair was slated to begin on March 30, and run throughout spring break.
