The province is revising spring road restrictions to get essential commodities like food and fuel to communities faster during the pandemic.
While weight restrictions are typically placed on heavy commercial vehicles in the spring to protect roads during the time when roads are most likely to weaken due to weather changes, the revised restrictions will let vehicles transport essential commodities at normal weight.
Such cargo includes groceries, water for non-industrial use, medical supplies, fuel, mail delivery and emergency equipment. It also applies to livestock and livestock feed.

“In order to allow vehicles to more easily transport essential goods during the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are easing spring road restrictions in certain circumstances,” Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said in a statement Tuesday.
Vehicles will be able to transport essential commodities at normal loading weight on highways typically at level 1 spring weight restrictions — a restriction applied to weak pavement — and will be able to transport commodities at roads typically at level 2 spring weight restriction — restrictions for pavement classified as very weak — under certain conditions.
“This will help ensure communities continue to have access to items such as medical supplies, groceries and emergency equipment at this crucial time,” Schuler said.
