Manitoba Hydro boss Jay Grewal earned $521,056 for 11 months of work in 2019, while outgoing president and CEO Kelvin Shepherd was paid close to a quarter-million even though he left the corporation in early February.
According to public compensation disclosure reports released this week, the president and chief executive officer of Manitoba Public Insurance, Ben Graham, made $358,279 last year, while Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries top executive, Peter Hak, earned $334,639.
Grewal, who took over as Hydro president and CEO on Feb. 4, 2019, was one of 76 employees at the province’s largest Crown corporation to earn $200,000 or more last year. On a pro-rated basis, she would earn about $568,000 over a full year.
Most of the corporation’s employees, including all executive members, recently agreed to take three days off without pay to meet provincial government-mandated spending reductions. The members of one union, Unifor, opposed the unpaid days, and a dozen of its members were laid off for four months.
Grewal, who previously had executive roles with B.C. Hydro and Northwest Territories Power Corp., succeeded Shepherd, who retired.
Shepherd had earned $466,275 in 2018 as president and CEO. While he left the corporation on Feb. 2, 2019, the corporation’s compensation disclosure report discloses that he earned $247,598 last year.
According to the report, earnings include overtime, allowances and premiums, taxable benefits, vacation payouts and termination/retirement payments.
Including Hak, eight Liquor & Lotteries corporation employees earned $200,000 or more in 2019. At MPI, there were also eight employees, including Graham, who earned $200,000 or more.
