Braxton Kuntz wasn’t going to be deterred by a major thunderstorm that forced the suspension of play for more than five hours Friday at the Manitoba Men’s Amateur Golf Championship.

The 16-year-old from Breezy Bend, who lost by one shot to Neel Soni on the final hole of the provincial junior men’s championship earlier in the week, piled up five birdies and only one bogey en route to a 4-under 68 and a three-shot lead at Morden’s Minnewasta Golf and Country Club.

Kuntz is competing at the Amateur for the first time.

Tied for second behind Kuntz’s 6-under 138 total were clubmate Justin McDonald, who carded a 70 Friday, and Elmhurst’s Marco Trstenjak, who equalled Kuntz’s 68.

Trstenjak had six birdies and two bogeys while McDonald responded with four birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Winnipeg’s Josh Neufeld surged to a 69 Friday and his 142 total was tied with Ryan Terdik of Pine Ridge in fourth.

Terdik has a pair of 72s to start the tournament.

Breezy Bend’s Eric Johnson, tied for the lead with Kuntz after an opening-round 70 on Thursday, slipped to a 78 and is 10 strokes off the pace.

Defending champ Colwyn Abgrail of Southwood fired a 71 Friday and pulled into a tie for sixth. Soni of St. Charles fired a 70 and sits seven shots behind Kuntz.

Twenty-three players remained on the course as darkness fell Friday. They will resume their second rounds at 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning.

The 72-hole tournament is slated shift to Glendale Golf and Country Club for Rounds 3 and 4 Saturday and Sunday.
