The Winnipeg Police Service has charged two people — one an adult, the other a minor — in the slaying of Joshua Robert Jeromiah Hansen earlier this month.
Police responded to a hotel on the 100 block of Higgins Avenue at 10:55 p.m. on Aug. 6 after receiving a report that a man had been assaulted there.
Officers found Hansen, 29, outside suffering from stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
Shortly before Hansen was fatally stabbed, there was another stabbing in the 100 block of Martha Avenue. The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for injuries and released.
On Aug. 11, homicide investigators arrested a suspect in the 100 block of Martha Avenue.
Craig Armand Norman Ducharme, 34, of Winnipeg, has been charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
On Aug. 16, a second suspect in Hansen’s killing, a 17-year-old male, was arrested in the area of Sherbrook Street and Cumberland Avenue.
Investigators said a woman was stabbed “just minutes before the unprovoked assault” on Hansen. The woman was taken to hospital, treated and released.
The 17-year-old has been charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and four counts of breaching court orders. Both accused are in custody.
Court records show Ducharme has a long history with the criminal justice system, including four previous assault convictions, four convictions for assaulting a police officer, three robbery convictions and two convictions for uttering threats.
In June 2018, the WPS issued a press release in a case where Ducharme was charged. Police responded to a convenience store on the 500 block of William Avenue after receiving a report that a man armed with a knife attempted to assault a store clerk.
The suspect fled from the scene but was arrested a short time later by police.
Investigators determined he’d entered the convenience store with his face covered and armed with a knife. He attempted to steal merchandise but was stopped by people in the store.
The suspect was locked inside the store, “at which time he began to kick at a cracked window causing a small hole,” police said.
“The male climbed through the broken window which caused numerous lacerations.”
Ducharme was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time in custody.
