The Winnipeg Jets are clearly comfortable with Laurent Brossoit as the backup to Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

Brossoit agreed Friday to a new contract for the upcoming season, worth US$1.5 million.

It’s the third consecutive one-year deal the B.C. product has inked with the Central Division club after spending four seasons in the Edmonton Oilers organization.

TYLER ESQUIVEL / WINNIPEG JETS Laurent Brossoit will be returning as the backup goaltender to the Winnipeg Jets next season.

Hellebuyck, named the league’s top goalie on Sept. 21, has been one of the league’s most active goalies the last three seasons but could get a few more nights off during what is likely to be a condensed NHL schedule in 2020-21. The creasemates have a solid relationship, on and off the ice, and both are represented by Manitoba-based player agent Ray Petkau.

Brossoit’s numbers took a nosedive last season after a sparkling start to his time in Winnipeg. He posted a 6-7-1 record with a 3.28 goals-against average and .895 save percentage in 2019-20 after a sensational 2018-19 campaign (13-6-2, 2.52 GAA, .925 SP).

He was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Draft after a stellar Western Hockey League career with the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Eric Comrie and Mikhail Berdin are also in the fold and will share the puck-stopping responsibilities for the Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate.
