What’s open and closed on New Year’s Day

Ringing in 2021 may be a welcome relief after a turbulent 2020, but New Year’s Eve celebrations will be yet another reminder of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public health orders remain in effect over New Year’s Day, meaning indoor gatherings must be confined to individual households, and outdoor gatherings must be kept to a five-person maximum.

Many businesses and government services change their hours on New Year’s Day. Here’s a selection:

COVID-19 test sites

Most COVID-19 testing sites will be open for regular hours Friday. The MPI drive-through sites at 1284 Main St. and 125 King Edward St., the drive-thru site at 1066 Nairn Ave., the Dakota Medical Centre site, the 2735 Pembina Hwy. site, the 604 St. Mary’s Rd. site, and the walk-in testing sites at 1 Research Rd., Assiniboia Downs and the Garrick Centre are all open regular hours.

The Red River College site will be open 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. The Thunderbird House site will be closed.

Shopping

Most malls, including CF Polo Park, St. Vital Centre, Kildonan Place and Grant Park Shopping Centre are closed Friday.

The Forks Market is open regular hours.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys and Superstore are closed. Walmart is open, with reduced hours. Safeway at River and Osborne is open 9am to 6pm.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg are closed. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.

Entertainment

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is closed Friday.

The Manitoba Museum is closed.

The Children’s Museum is closed.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is closed.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is closed.

Movie theatres are closed.

Recycling and trash

Recycling and garbage will not be collected Friday. If your collection day is Friday, put your carts out Saturday.

The Brady Road landfill is closed.

Leisure activities

All leisure centres are closed Friday.

City of Winnipeg swimming pools are closed.

Winnipeg Transit

On Friday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Libraries

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are temporarily closed to the public due to pandemic restrictions. Holds pickup service is also closed Friday.

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New Year’s Day.

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Friday.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed to the public.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed.

There is no mail delivery on New Year’s Day. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
