New COVID-19 infections jumped slightly in Manitoba, with 139 cases reported across the province Thursday.
The provincial government said 75 new cases were detected in the Northern Health region, 52 in Winnipeg, five in Interlake-Eastern, four in Southern Health, and three in Prairie Mountain.
Manitoba public health officials did not hold a media availability Thursday afternoon. A news conference is scheduled for Friday.
The province also announced two more deaths due to COVID-19: a woman in her 70s and a man in his 70s, both from Winnipeg. Since March 2020, 878 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Manitoba.
The provincewide five-day test positivity rate climbed to six per cent, continuing a week-long rise after dipping to 4.8 per cent Feb. 11 — a day prior to Manitoba easing some pandemic restrictions. In Winnipeg, the test positivity rate was 4.4 per cent.
The province processed 1,827 tests at its laboratories Wednesday.
Of the cases reported Thursday, 51 infections were in people under 20 years old. Provincial data shows, as of Feb. 16, 73 cases have been connected to schools in the past two weeks, including 58 students.
According to the province, there are 1,153 active cases of COVID-19, though that number is inflated due to a backlog in data entry. The provincial dashboard shows the top five districts with active cases as: Cross Lake/Pimicikamak Cree Nation (167), Island Lake (155), Northern Remote (127), Thompson/Mystery Lake (76), and St. Boniface (59).
As of Thursday morning, 224 people were in hospital receiving treatment related to COVID-19, including 27 in intensive care. Eighty-four COVID-19 patients are still considered infectious.
On Wednesday, leadership at Cross Lake First Nation, also known as Pimicikamak, announced a single suspected case of the highly contagious B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant came back negative, after being sent for genetic sequencing at the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg.
