A Main Street hotel was shut down Wednesday after a visit from provincial health inspectors, leaving residents scrambling to find shelter.

The Manwin Hotel was issued a health hazard order after health inspectors were notified Tuesday about the lack of heat. When inspectors arrived, they found that the lack of heat had compromised other safety services, including the water supply and fire sprinklers, a provincial spokesperson said.

The hotel will remain closed until it meets public-health standards, the spokesperson said.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority sent an outreach team to the hotel Wednesday to check on residents with health concerns and answer questions, a spokesperson said.

Space was made available at the WRHA’s 640 Main St. location for residents to speak with the WRHA and Manitoba’s Families Department, which is currently working with ousted residents to find housing in the meantime. The Residential Tenancies Branch will be working with tenants looking for rent refunds.

The number of people affected was not provided.

The hotel was the site of a fatal stabbing and an assault within the last year.
