Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 16/06/2021 (1943 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Winnipeggers will soon be able to take a dip in the city’s outdoor pools.
Starting June 25, Kildonan park, Transcona Aquatic Park, St. Vital pool and Westdale pool will be open.
On June 28, all other outdoor pools are set to open.
To support the reopenings, the city is recalling 360 staff members who were temporarily redeployed or laid off.
On July 1, wading pools in Dakota Park, McKittrick Park, Central Park and Westdale Park will be open 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The city notes all other wading pools will begin opening July 2, weather permitting.
While capacity at the outdoor pools will be reduced based on public health health restrictions, residents are encouraged to book time blocks for prior to arriving. The city says there is no guarantee of drop-in admissions.
“We are excited, we want to see our residents being able to use these resources safely, and follow the public health orders, as we’re not out of this yet,” said Jason Shaw, the assistant chief of emergency management.
“We want to do this in anticipation of the school year ending, get the pools open and enjoy a safe summer.”
Residents can register through the City of Winnipeg’s website at leisureonline or contact 311 to book a swim block of up to two hours. Pre-registration for outdoor pools begins Monday afternoon.
The city is advising residents lockers will not be available, and there will be a limited use of change rooms, washrooms, and showers. Gatherings of more than five people are prohibited at both outdoor and wading pools. The city says it is going to make sure workers monitor social distancing and hand sanitization use.
Mayor Brian Bowman addressed these changes set for early July and is asking the public to remain vigilant in following the public health orders.
“We anticipate the province is going to update their provincial public health orders and there’s always the possibility they could go in a direction we don’t anticipate which could aggravate operations and the timeliness of changes,” said Bowman.
“All of this will be done in a matter that is consistent with current public health orders.”
Spray pads are also set for an increase in hours starting June 26, seasonal operating hours will be expanded to 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Indoor facilities will remain closed.
