The cause of a large fire at a Morden golf course is under investigation.

Firefighters remained on scene into Saturday evening, working to fully extinguish the blaze.

Police were called to the Minnewasta Golf and Country Club around 9 a.m. Saturday for a report of smoke. Officers from the Morden Police Service arrived to see heavy smoke coming from the roof of the restaurant, said Const. Bill Flynn. Firefighting crews arrived shortly thereafter.

The main building was completely engulfed and is likely a total loss, although no damage estimates are yet available. The blaze also damaged other structures on the property, which is located about a five-minute drive southwest of Morden’s town centre. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters with the town’s fire and rescue service were still on scene at the well-known location as of Saturday evening.

“It sounds like the fire is under control and pretty much out, and the office of the fire commissioner is going to be investigating and they should be on scene shortly,” Flynn said Saturday afternoon.

Morden Mayor Brandon Burley posted on Twitter Saturday afternoon that the fire was an example of why the town needed fire-tanker equipment.

“Our newly commissioned fire-tanker saw its first action this morning as the Minnewasta Golf Course restaurant was lost. These difficult to reach properties, industrial fires, and newly annexed rural properties are why this tanker was needed,” Burley tweeted. He could not be reached for comment.
