Manitobans have two new millionaires in their midst.

Jim Konowalchuk of Winnipeg struck it big Feb. 16, with a $1-million win in the Lotto 6/49.

Konowalchuk bought his ticket at the Normand Park Shell on St. Mary’s Road. After the draw, he checked his ticket online and was shocked to see the digits line up perfectly to the guaranteed prize draw.

“I ran upstairs to tell my wife,” Konowalchuk said Monday. “I said, ‘Get up! We won a million dollars!’”

The couple are trying to “absorb” the situation before they decide h0w to spend their newfound riches. Konowalchuk said the the timing of the win is perfect.

“We can help out the children and not have to worry about money anymore.”

Some of that money magic was still in the air days later, when Conrad Hykawy of Thompson cashed in with his own $1-million win in the Western Max draw.

Hykawy bought his ticket for the Feb. 17 draw at Northway Gas & Convenience in Thompson but checked his ticket while on a trip to Winnipeg.

The store’s self-checker couldn’t fit all the zeros, so he wasn’t sure just how much he’d won. He thought maybe $100,000, but didn’t say anything for about a day-and-a-half.

“I don’t want people to get too excited,” he said.

Finally, Hykawy made the call to confirm his win.

“They told me I won a million,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Hykawy plans to buy a new truck and travel to Cuba, when he feels it’s safe to do so.
