The Winnipeg Goldeyes are set to take the field.
Training camp for the American Association pro baseball squad begins Thursday at Shaw Park, with the first of four pre-season contests slated for Saturday afternoon.
It’s the first time in three years the Fish will play spring ball in the city. Pandemic restrictions forced them to spend the entire 2020 season as a travelling team based out of Fargo, N.D., and the first half of the ‘21 campaign playing out of Jackson, Tenn.
Winnipeg closed out last year’s season Sept. 6 with a 9-3 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park in front of 2,754 fans, finishing 50-49 to miss the playoffs.
Longtime manager Rick Forney’s crew hasn’t qualified for post-season play since it captured the American Association title in 2017.
The Goldeyes face Black Sox Professional Baseball on back-to-back days this weekend, with both games scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The Black Sox team comprises current and former professionals that travels to various independent league training camps.
“The games allow host teams to face pro-calibre competition as they prepare for the upcoming season, while Black Sox players benefit from showcasing their abilities in front of top independent league managers,” the Goldeyes explained, in a statement.
Winnipeg hosts Fargo-Moorhead twice next week (Tuesday and Wednesday, each at 6:05 p.m.), and the RedHawks will remain in the Manitoba capital for the regular-season opener, Friday, May 13.
Individual game tickets are on sale to the public.
