Connor Taylor has wanted to be a video game creator since he was 12. Red River College Polytech’s newest program will start him on that journey.

The college unveiled its Pathway to Information Technology program on Monday.

Taylor, now 26, is the first student to enrol in the new course, which is an eight-month preparatory program for business information technology, information security and IT operations.

JOHN WOODS / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS “I’m excited to get started. I’ve started reading and writing to prepare for the fall,” said Connor Taylor, first student in IT Pathway program.

“I’m excited to get started. I’ve started reading and writing to prepare for the fall,” he said.

The program becomes the college’s fourth pathway program, which are designed to provide Indigenous Manitobans with skills and supports required to transition into other RRC Polytech programs by increasing their academic, personal, social and financial readiness.

“It’s beneficial to have a stepping stone since I haven’t been to school since I was a teenager,” Taylor said. “It’s nice to be able to rely on a program without losing your independence.”

Fred Meier, RRC Polytech president and CEO, made the announcement at the college’s new facility Manitou a bi Bii daziigae, where the course will be taught.

“We’ve found through the programs that there’s a higher level of success when people are provided the support necessary,” he said.

Meier also highlighted the importance of an RBC Reaction by Collision event, which included Indigenous traditions, art and talent, held in tandem with Monday’s announcement.

“We want to build Indigenous culture into who we are as an institution. We want people to feel that they belong and it’s important to have an event like this to expose more people to what we’re building,” he said.

The program is supported by a $1 million pledge from RBC.

“There’s incredible talent among Indigenous communities. If we can help be part of their journey in some small way, that is truly meaningful for us,” Robb Ritchie, RBC regional director of communications, said.

The program will officially begin this fall.
