Winnipeg came as close as possible to setting a daily humidity record but had to settle for a tie.

The dew point record for the Manitoba capital is 26.1 C, set in July 1966.

While at first it appeared Sunday’s dew point was a couple of notches higher, in the end, it was a tie for the highest absolute humidity on record.

The dew point is how much moisture is in the air, said Scott Kehler, president and chief scientist of Weatherlogics.

The humidex, a combination of temperature and humidity, is the summer equivalent of wind chill.

“All of the soil moisture we had earlier this spring is releasing moisture into the air every day,” Kehler said Monday.

“If we get enough heat, we could challenge for that record sometime this summer. It is certainly a different summer than it was last year.”

Environment Canada meteorologist Danielle Desjardins also confirmed the dew point Sunday matched 1966’s record.

“It was very, very close — within point one of a degree of setting the record,” she said.

As for the humidex Sunday, Kehler said it was 44 C — hot, but also not a record.

The record is 47.3 C, set in July 2007, he said.
