Government services, business hours for Terry Fox Day

Many Manitobans will get the day off work Monday to honour Terry Fox, an iconic Canadian athlete born in Winnipeg who embarked on a cross-country run to raise money and awareness for cancer research in 1980.

The fundraiser has continued since and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars from countries across the world. Fox died in 1981.

Other Canadian provinces also recognize Aug. 1 as a civic holiday.

The Free Press is not publishing a print edition Monday, but will publish an e-edition free to all subscribers.

Many businesses and government services change their hours over the Terry Fox Day weekend. Here’s a selection:

COVID-19

PCR testing for pre-operative patients will be available at Dakota Medical Centre (17-845 Dakota St.) from 6 to 10 p.m., and the Minor Illness and Injury Clinic (102-1001 Corydon Ave.) from 5 to 7 p.m.

The RBC Convention Centre’s vaccine clinic is not offering appointments Monday.

SHOPPING

Malls are open at reduced hours Monday. CF Polo Park, St. Vital Centre, Outlet Collection and Kildonan Place will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Grant Park will be open from noon to 5 p.m.

The Forks Market is open regular hours.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, are open regular or reduced hours.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg operate from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with several closing at 5 p.m. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Manitoba Museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Children’s Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is closed Monday.

Movie theatres are open.

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling and garbage will be collected as normally scheduled for those who have Monday as their collection day.

The Brady Road landfill is open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

All leisure centres are closed Monday.

The Crescent Drive, Harbour View, John Blumberg, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park golf courses will be open.

Outdoor City of Winnipeg swimming pools will be open, weather permitting. Indoor pools will be closed Monday.

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

On Monday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed Monday.

CEMETERIES

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cemetery offices will be closed on the holiday.

City hall and other civic offices are closed Monday.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority remains closed to the public.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed Monday.

There is no mail delivery Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
