Two suspects accused of robbing five elderly women of their purses are facing robbery, fraud, firearms and drug-trafficking charges.

Major crimes investigators were first notified about a robbery in the parking lot of Club Regent Casino on July 17, the Winnipeg Police Service said Monday.

At about 4 p.m., the victim in her 70s, was dragged to the ground by a male suspect. She was hurt and the suspect ran off.

Then on July 19, at about 2:30 a.m., the victim’s credit card was used at a convenience store and a fast-food restaurant on the 3000 block of Portage Avenue.

On Aug. 1, at about 5:45 p.m., another victim in her 70s was robbed in the parking lot of a grocery store on the 3900 block of Grant Avenue — this time by two men. Her purse was stolen and the suspects fled. Her credit card was used to buy gas, liquor, cannabis and at convenience stores on the 6600 block of Grant Avenue.

On Aug. 6, at about 11:30 a.m., a woman in her 80s was robbed of her purse outside of a pharmacy on the 3600 block of Portage Avenue. The suspect ran off.

On Aug. 7, at about 3:30 p.m., another victim in her 70s was robbed of her purse in the parking lot of a Grant Avenue grocery store, this time on the 1100 block, and again the suspect fled.

The next day in the same parking lot, a victim in her 70s was robbed of her purse.

Police said the robberies were captured on video surveillance and investigators identified two suspects.

On Sunday, officers found the pair in a park in Headingley and arrested them. Investigators also executed a warrant on a storage facility.

Police seized a .22 calibre rifle, about 1.5 grams of fentanyl, 11 grams of cocaine and three grams of heroin.

A 25-year-old woman from Winnipeg was charged with four counts each of possession of property obtained by crime and fraudulent use of a credit card, three counts of robbery and one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm.

A 23-year-old man from Winnipeg was charged with five counts of robbery, six counts each of fraudulent use of a credit card and possession of property obtained by crime, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Both were detained in custody. Neither have prior criminal convictions, court records show.
