The man shot by Winnipeg police officers in Windsor Park early Saturday has died.

On Monday, the province’s civilian police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, revealed new details on the shooting and what led up to it, alleging the man advanced on the officers with a weapon.

According to the notification to the IIU from the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were conducting a check stop in the area of Portage Avenue and Empress Street at around 1:50 a.m.

A driver behind the wheel of a 2021 Chevrolet Camaro SS didn’t stop, despite officers’ directions. The vehicle instead continued on Portage to Kenaston Boulevard. As the vehicle drove south on Kenaston, the police helicopter began to follow it near Bishop Grandin Boulevard.

Two officers, each in their own cruisers, went to the vehicle’s registered owner’s home as the car pulled into the back of the property at 2:12 a.m., the IIU said.

A male suspect exited the vehicle, got an unspecified weapon and walked toward officers, who both fired shots, striking him several times, the IIU said.

The watchdog said the wounded man was immediately given medical attention before he was taken to Health Sciences Centre, where he later died.

The man’s name and age have not been released.

The IIU is mandated under provincial legislation to investigate serious injuries caused by or in the presence of on- or off-duty police.

The watchdog has asked any witnesses or others who have information or video footage related to the incident to call its office toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
