Winnipeg police have arrested a man accused in three purse snatchings in September.
Police allege the suspect then used credit and debit cards stolen in two of the robberies to make purchases at various businesses, including gas stations, motels and a restaurant.
On Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m., a suspect robbed a 79-year-old woman in the 500 block of Kenaston Boulevard of her purse at knifepoint, using the blade to cut the purse’s strap before fleeing in a vehicle, police said.
Two days later, at about 11 p.m., a suspect robbed a 66-year-old woman’s purse on the 400 block of McPhillips Street before leaving the scene in a vehicle.
On Sept. 26, at about 12:30 p.m., a suspect robbed another victim, a 79-year-old woman, on the 600 block of Cambridge Street, before running away.
There’s no indication the suspect was armed in the second two robberies, Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said Saturday. None of the victims were injured.
Major crimes police identified a suspect in the spree and arrested him at Main Street and Rupert Avenue on Sept. 27, where he was found in a vehicle around 5:15 p.m.
The accused, a 50-year-old Winnipeg man, will be charged with three counts of robbery and nine counts of fraud under $5,000. He was released on an undertaking.
