Another Progressive Conservative MLA is planning to call it quits.

In a letter to his southern Manitoba constituents this week, Dennis Smook, (La Verendrye), announced that he will not run for re-election.

“It has been a difficult decision but one that I feel is the right thing to do,” the 69-year-old Smook wrote.

His plan to retire follows announcements from Ralph Eichler (Lakeside) Blaine Pedersen (Midland), and Eileen Clarke (Agassiz) that they will not run again, and Scott Fielding (Kirkfield Park) resigning in June to work for a consulting firm.

Smook was first elected as the MLA for La Verendrye in 2011 and re-elected in 2016.

“During these past 11 years I have learned a lot about government and politics and have enjoyed representing and helping constituents to try and address their concerns,” his letter to constituents said. “I have not always been able to help everyone, but I have tried.”

Before entering provincial politics, the businessman who lives in Vita served as a trustee for the Boundary Trails School Division.
