Almost one year after an 18-year-old woman was slain at Fisher River Cree Nation, RCMP are still looking for her killer.

Samantha Gabriel died Nov. 7, 2021. She was found in a residence at the First Nation (some 220 kilometres north of Winnipeg) and taken to hospital the day before with life-threatening injuries.

In a statement released Friday, RCMP major crime services investigators say they strongly believe there is someone out there who has direct information about Gabriel’s slaying.

“We have conducted numerous interviews, followed many leads, and it has led us to determine that there are likely several individuals who have information directly related to the death of this young woman,” Sgt. Gary Bird said.

“Samantha had just turned 18, and she had so much life ahead of her. It was brutally taken away, and we are asking those who could help bring justice to Samantha to come forward and speak up for her.”

When asked about the status of a 16-year-old boy also found in the residence that day with non-life-threatening injuries, an RCMP spokeswoman would only say investigators continue to look for answers.

RCMP officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a Fisher River residence on Nov. 6, 2021, at about 2:50 a.m.

In a news release Nov. 8, 2021, the RCMP did not release Gabriel’s name, but said its major crime and forensic identification services were continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information about Gabriel’s slaying is asked to contact RCMP at 431-489-8105, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or leave a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.
