A Brandon man accused of 16 counts of animal cruelty had been banned from owning animals when authorities found the carcasses of 14 kittens and two rabbits at his home, police say.

The 28-year-old man was arrested after two people who had given him kittens grew suspicious and tipped off the chief veterinary office, the Brandon Police Service said.

“These individuals got talking and thought it was odd that they both gave him kittens,” said public information officer Kirby Sararas.

In June, police reported the man had been charged with injuring or endangering an animal after an investigation revealed he had acquired and injured domesticated animals, mostly cats.

Police released him on conditions to appear in court on Aug. 15.

On Wednesday, Sararas said the June incident appeared to involve eight kittens. She noted one of the conditions of the man’s release was that he not possess animals.

In the recent case, the chief veterinary office, which was aware the man was banned from having animals, contacted police.

“Police attended with animal control… to the residence and located the carcasses,” Sararas said, adding two living cats were found and taken to a vet.

Necropsies will be conducted on the carcasses to determine the cause of death.

The man is also charged with 18 counts of breaching his release order by possessing the dead animals plus the two live cats.

Jess Nichols was arrested and appeared in Brandon provincial court on Wednesday. He remains in custody.
