Three people were taken to hospital and two cats were killed in a fire on Doncaster Street early Thursday.
Fire crews were sent to a two-storey townhouse in the 100 block of Doncaster Street at about 4 a.m. They extinguished the fire roughly 90 minutes later.
One person inside the townhouse got out and was transported to hospital in stable condition. Two area residents went inside the burning townhouse before firefighters arrived to search for anyone who might still be inside. Both people were taken to hospital — one in unstable condition and one in stable condition.
Firefighters found a cat inside, but it died. Another cat was found dead inside.
Two townhouse units sustained significant damage, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release, and other units sustained smoke damage. The city’s emergency social services team helped displaced residents find temporary accommodations.
The city said preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire is related to smoking.
On Wednesday night, fire crews extinguished a fire in a parking garage at St. Mary Avenue and Vaughan Street. Crews were sent to the location at 8:20 p.m. and found the fire within a vestibule leading to the neighbouring commercial building.
