A man is dead after he was shot by Winnipeg police during a traffic stop Saturday night.
Police were conducting the stop on Portage Avenue and Bourkevale Drive around 7:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.
“During the incident, a firearm was discharged by one of the officers, striking the adult male driver,” police said in the release.

Police shot and killed a man during a traffic stop Saturday evening at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Bourkevale Drive.
The man was rushed to hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.
Police did not release the man’s age or identity.
Sources told the Free Press the man who died is the brother of a former Winnipeg police officer.
No other details about the incident were provided.
Mark Alambatin, who lives on the third floor of an apartment building at 1800 Portage Ave., said he heard what he believes was a gunshot Saturday night.
“I’ve got an eight-year-old son inside, so I just told him it was a firecracker or something,” Alambatin said. “Honestly, I was scared. It was like a scene in a movie.”
He said he turned up the volume on the TV so his son wouldn’t notice what was going on outside.
He said he saw an ambulance and eight to 10 cop cars.
“When I looked around at one in the morning, the car was still there,” he said.
Police said the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is now investigating.
