A nine-year-old Winnipeg girl is hoping to do good in her city, one care package at a time.
Last month, Grace Kennedy handed out 18 such packages to people experiencing homelessness downtown near Siloam Mission.
“I just thought it’d be a nice idea,” she said when speaking to a Free Press reporter at her home.

Inside each bag was a sandwich, banana, bottle of water, pair of socks, and chocolate-chip cookie.
“It was her idea, and she came up with it. And so, I just wanted to support her with that. I thought it was a really great idea,” said her mother, Nellie Kennedy, who helped hand out the packages Nov. 26.
This isn’t the first time Grace has reached out to the homeless community.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Grace and her mom drove around downtown Winnipeg handing out care packages to people waiting at red lights. They later saw people lining up outside Siloam Mission and decided to go there. In total, they handed out 15 that day.
“When Grace and I… left after the first time, we said, ‘OK, we’re going to do this again. Let’s make a mental note. Saturday 3:30. There will be people here,’” said Kennedy.
She said Grace has always been a helpful person. On a whim, she once asked her aunt if they could go pick up garbage around her neighbourhood.
“We filled up like the entire bag,” Kennedy said.
Another time, someone outside Grant Park Shopping Centre asked the Kennedys for food. They went back inside and bought him something to eat.
“I’m just really proud of her,” Kennedy said.
Grace and her mom plan to hand out more care packages in January.
