A temporary fire hall will be built as planned in Waverley West, after a group of residents lost a battle at city hall to have it relocated.

The new $3 million fire-paramedic station at 110 Eaglewood Dr. is intended to help reduce emergency response times in Waverley West, as the community awaits a $12.1 million permanent station slated to open on Bison Drive in 2025.

Nearly two dozen Winnipeggers appealed a city variance that would allow the portable station to be placed in the corner of a park at that site, arguing it should be built elsewhere to avoid eating up scarce green space.

Some neighbours also feared the proximity to a normally quiet residential space and playground would create noise, traffic and safety concerns.

However, the appeals committee denied that request Wednesday after hearing the modular station would allow the city to cut emergency response times in the area in half, from about 12 minutes to six.

The committee’s decision is final.
