Winnipeg city councillor Sherri Rollins won’t run against the son of the late MP Jim Carr to represent the Liberals in Winnipeg South Centre.

In a text message Thursday, Rollins said she is withdrawing from the race with Ben Carr to represent the federal riding held by his father from 2015 until he died of cancer on Dec. 12, 2022, at age 71.

“I want to thank everyone who encouraged me to put my name forward and who offered their support,” Rollins said in a statement.

Winnipeg city councillor Sherri Rollins won’t run against the son of the late MP Jim Carr to represent the Liberals in Winnipeg South Centre.

“It is not a decision I make lightly, but I really feel like my heart is with city hall and in advancing the priorities of the constituents of Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry,” said Rollins who did not immediately respond to an interview request.

“I wish Ben Carr all the best as he works to become the next MP for Winnipeg South Centre.”

Carr announced last week he was officially seeking the Liberal nomination.

Rollins, who was re-elected to city council in October 2022 and is on Mayor Scott Gillingham’s executive policy committee, has represented the ward since 2018.

A byelection is expected to be held in Winnipeg South Centre this summer.

Under federal law, a byelection must be called within 180 days of a seat becoming vacant, with an election period of at least 36 days, but no more than 50 days.
