Two dogs were killed in a blaze that broke out in a Fort Richmond bungalow early Monday.

City fire crews were busy, responding to three blazes in a five-hour span.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members were called to the bungalow on Bryn Mawr Road shortly before 3 a.m., a news release said.

Smoke was billowing out of the home when crews arrived and went inside to fight the fire, which was brought under control about an hour later.

Firefighters found two dogs inside; both died of fire-related injuries. There were no people inside.

In an earlier incident Sunday night, firefighters rescued a cat while tackling a blaze in a vacant two-storey house in the 600 block of Young Street in the West End. The cat was taken in by the city’s animal services agency.

Flames and heavy smoke were coming from the house when crews arrived shortly after 10 p.m., the WFPS said.

The blaze was brought under control in less than 20 minutes.

About an hour later, crews were called to a garage fire in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street, which was at risk of spreading to a vacant house.

Firefighters extinguished the fire shortly after midnight and prevented flames from spreading to the house.

The cause of each fire remains under investigation.

Damage estimates were not released.
