A former Winnipeg junior high school teacher has been charged with multiple sex offences allegedly committed against a young student.

City police child abuse investigators were contacted about the sexual assault and luring of a teen girl who attended Acadia Junior High, in the Fort Richmond neighbourhood, the Winnipeg Police Service said Tuesday.

The girl told investigators that over seven months between 2021 and 2022, a teacher at the school “forged an inappropriate relationship with her,” police said, adding “there was sexual communication over social media.”

On one occasion, police said, the accused tried to kiss the girl but she pulled away and ran. The girl wasn’t physically injured during the incidents, police said.

Jan Marcopined Laya, 32, of Winnipeg, was arrested Saturday.

He’s been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and luring a person under 14 by telecommunication, as well as transmitting, making available, distributing or selling sexually explicit material to someone under 16.

He was released by the courts on a release order with conditions prohibiting contact and communication with youth under 18.

Police said anyone who wants to speak with an investigator can call the child abuse unit at 204-986-3296, and there are supports from victim services at 204-986-6350 and Klinic Community Health at 204-786-8631.
