The number of immigrants to be allowed in to Manitoba under the provincial nominee program this year will increase by more than 3,000 applicants to 9,500.

“The Manitoba government advocated strongly for this increase, which will enable us to further leverage immigration to grow Manitoba’s economy and meet labour market needs in critical sectors, including health care,” Immigration Minister John Reyes said in a news release.

In total, 3,175 nomination spaces have been added from the 2022 allocation.

Under the program, applicants are chosen based on their skills and ability to integrate into the provincial workforce in occupations where workers are in short supply, such as in health care.

Since 1998, more than 185,000 nominees and their families have immigrated to Manitoba from countries around the world.

Reyes and a delegation went to the Philippines last month to recruit health care workers, who would apply to immigrate under the nominee program. The government says more than 350 letters of intent were given to potential recruits.
